Celebrating in Singapore

Everything you've heard about the island of Singapore is absolutely true: impeccably clean and modern, everyday citizens walking around dressed to the nines. a subway system that is unbelievably enjoyable and entertaining, the epitome of a shopper's paradise.

Let's start with Changi Airport: a tourist destination in and of itself: catch the latest movie, enjoy a massage, take a swim or peruse the stunning collection of indoor orchids and sunflowers; or in our case since we are here during "festive season"; gawk at over the top Christmas decorations: cherry red ornaments taller than Stanley, oversized and beautifully wrapped gifts lining the baggage claim luggage belt, pine trimmings and wreaths everywhere you turn.

Our first day in Singapore was marred only by the taxi drivers as they don't know a thing about where places are located. As it was our first day, we did not have an exact address of the restaurant where we planned to meet a friend. Of course, I assumed the taxi driver would know where P.S. Cafe is located since it seems to be a pretty well-known spot. Boy, was I wrong. Luckily, we all shared the most delectable (and huge!) wedge of chocolate cake in history, so the ill-fated taxi experience soon faded away.

The best way to get around Singapore is the subway system. Again, you would be hard-pressed to find even a candy wrapper on the ground. People just don't litter here. There is a S$500 fine imposed on anyone caught drinking or eating in most areas of the subway and there are video cameras everywhere. (Although Bristow has had his sippy cup in hand several times and no one looked at us twice.)

I'm sure all the rules and regulations must drive the local teenagers batty, but as a mom of two young children, the clean atmosphere is a dream. Not only is the subway easy to maneuver, air-conditioned and safe; the shopping is nothing short of sensational. We're talking Bobbi Brown underground, European bakeries and Japanese pastry shops at every turn, handmade spa products by Lemongrass House and every other wonderful food and product concoction you can think of.

On New Year's Eve, we woke the kids up at 9 p.m. and headed to Swissotel The Stamford near the Marina District which boasts the highest restaurant in Asia at 70 stories tall.  The atmosphere was cozy, elegant, conducive to bringing the kids and incredibly festive. The streets were so jam packed after the fireworks with thousands of revelers that we jumped in a ric shaw home to top off the night.

Happy New Year – we wish you the very best in 2010! xoxo

Inspirational Woman of 2009

Melati Erhart was the very first face of DHR back in 2007 when we launched the company. Melati epitomizes the DHR woman – one who strives for balance in her life – not easy to do as we all know. At 33, she is a top model in Bali where it is not uncommon to walk into a resort and see her life size image on the wall of a boutique or peppered throughout a beautiful spa guide.

Not only is she extremely busy with her modeling career but she is also an active mother of two young daughters, an accomplished batik artist, jewelry designer and business owner of a popular jewelry shop in the heart of Seminyak; Bali’s trendy shopping mecca.

Melati was born and raised on the island of Bali, Indonesia in a large family of nine children and credits her mother as a guiding figure in her life. “My mother raised all nine of us and never seemed to let the chaos get to her. We were not well-off and sometimes she would go without eating for a day or two just to make sure there was enough for my brothers and sisters. Whenever life seems tough, I think of her and it helps to keep things in perspective.”

Melati and her Austrian husband, Georg, take advantage of all that Bali has to offer and enjoy family Sundays at Ku De Ta, an internationally renowned hot spot located on the beach in Seminyak. Their favorite restaurants include Naught Nuri’s and Ary’s Warung in Ubud, sunsets at Rock Bar, the Ayana Resort, in Nusa Dua and La Lucciola in Seminyak.

We are so inspired by Melati’s determination to balance family, career and creative passion that we have named one of our new 2010 summer dresses after her. The Melati dress epitomizes her carefree island-inspired style and will be launched this spring.

Living in Sanur

Four months ago, our family moved here from Hawaii not knowing much about the island of Bali or where we would settle down. We spent the first month hopping from hotel to hotel in areas like Ubud, Seminyak, and Jimbaran. By the end of that month, we were all exhausted and desperate to find a place to call home.

We decided to put a deposit down on a really beautiful house in Jimbaran within walking distance to the beach even though the town didn't totally fit our family's needs. As it was a new house and needed one more week to be completed, a friend offered his house in Sanur for us to hunker down while he was away on business. To be honest, I hadn't given Sanur too much respect or allowed the time to explore it due to all of the negative things I had read on the web: boring, nothing to do, crummy beach, etc. Read More …

Chocolate is Good For You

It has been almost four months since our family arrived on the island of Bali. I have to say that I'm already feeling like a local. I know where to go for the best cup of coffee, freshest grilled mahi mahi, shadiest spot on the beach, and even the best place to buy diapers in bulk.

There's no question that the hands down winner of our favorite restaurant; especially for the mind blowing chocolate desserts goes to the Casa Luna Restaurant located in the bustling mountain town of Ubud. Chocolate mousse, chocolate decadence, flourless chocolate cake – you name it, they make it and along with the ambiance, it's magical!

Built on a lush, steep ravine; Casa Luna is the successful dream child of powerhouse Bali expat, Janet De Neefe, who arrived on the island in 1974 and has built an iconic empire that includes two fabulous restaurants (Casa Luna & Indus), a world famous cooking school, and a charming hotel in downtown Ubud called the Honeymoon Guesthouses. She is the author of a delicious book called "Fragrant Rice" and also spearheaded the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival which is gaining tremendous momentum. Last October, the festival attracted internationally acclaimed guest writers including Fatima Bhutto and Wole Soyinka.

My New Uniform

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but I am LIVING in our new mini-dress!

As a dress or tunic top, they really do epitomize the DHR lifestyle; comfortable luxe.

I wish I had thought of this little dress when I was pregnant – I would have lived in them as dresses in the beginning; tops and skirts when things started to get out of control!

Last night, I wore the sage tunic over white linen pants with my silver Bernardo thong sandals…I am addicted!

I Surrender… Bali, here we come!

Call it a mid-life crisis or the adventure of a lifetime. We kind of like to call it redefining the American dream. It took us 5 months to formulate, 2 months to execute and 22 hours to travel from our idyllic home base of Kamuela on Hawaii's Big Island to our new landing pad of Bali, Indonesia.

There are four members on our team: David (41), Stacy (40), Stanley (5) and Bristow (15 months). Our family sabbatical sprung from the harrowing kindergarten application process at the end of '08. The last five years had whipped by at unprecedented speed – what would the next thirteen look like?

I have a horrible memory anyway, so beyond birthday parties and a few Christmas mornings thrown in there, what would I truly remember over the next few years, especially when the stress of daily life in America seems to weigh heavily on even the fun times. Our family's interest lies in spending more time together, not less, and yeah, I know that sounds crazy, but we actually enjoy each other's company.

So, we rented out our beautiful house, spent six weeks getting all of our financial stuff automated and paperless, packed two large Da Kine duffle bags, Bristow's Pack & Play, David's surfboard, Stanley's Legos and planned our escape in search of more laughter, less stress and yes, lots of beach time.

Kohala Coast Wrap  Luxurious silk wraps

Diamond Head Road's mission is to bring Hawaiian design to a whole new luxury level; incorporating art forms and images that we saw in the early 1900's. Our philosophy is to provide clients with the absolute best quality on the market, yet with low maintenance care that doesn't infringe on today's super charged lifestyle.

Our pure silk charmeuse wraps epitomize this vision and continue to be the best selling component of the Diamond Head Road line. Our clients love the wraps for their versatility: Sarong? Check. Shawl? Check. Wrap skirt? Check. Blanket? Check. Comfort for teething baby? Check.

No kidding. My clients continue to educate me on the ways our wraps serve them. We recently had a wonderfully artsy gal buy five of the Torch Ginger in Papaya to use as tablecloths for an upcoming event. I'm always open to creative and unique suggestions!

My favorite aspect of our silk wraps beyond their versatility and scrumptiousness is their low maintenance. Everyone is afraid of silk due to the notion that it can't be washed. On the contrary, grade A silk is a durable natural fiber that CAN be gently washed and dried on a low to medium temp – make sure to remove the wraps promptly as the dry quickly and won't wrinkle if you remove them while still hot. The silk does lose a little bit of its lustrous shine, but I actually prefer the sand washed, vintage look that it takes on with each washing. To ensure that our wraps could handle several washings, we sew them with pure silk thread – not rayon or cotton that causes buckling when washed.

So, please enjoy and don't be afraid to get some use out of your wrap. With two young kids, it is quite common for me to throw a wet wrap into my bag after a long day at the beach; toss it in the wash with the towels, dry it and immediately put it back on as a dress or skirt for the evening.
