Plum Silk Wrap

Choosing Quality Over Quantity…

Sustainable luxury is not a new term, but one that consumers will hear more of as we make a conscientious choice to live better, choosing handmade pieces designed to endure for decades.

According to Francois-Henri Pinault, chairman of the French luxury giant PPR that represents brands such as Gucci, "The idea of luxury is shifting from excess and waste and returning to genuine values that include timelessness, sincerity and exemplary standards."

Brands like Diamond Head Road employ artisans who possess specific skills passed down from generation to generation; skills that often cannot be found in western countries such as the U.S. as we found when we were experimenting with our first silk wraps.

As Anne Zegna, image director of one of the world's most luxurious men's fashion brands points out, "The fashion business has an obligation to sustain those skills and the lives of those workers."

At DHR, we recently launched a grassroots "clothes-raiser" called "Ibu* & Me" which reaches out to parents of the many international schools in Bali to recycle gently used clothing and baby blankets that we are distributed to the island's families in need.

We couldn't exist without the skilled people of Bali, and the idea of helping the children here makes us even more excited about expanding our brand.

BECCA Beach Kahala starts a trend

Thanks to little Becca, the namesake of uber popular boutique, BECCA Beach, at the Kahala Hotel & Resort in Honolulu, our silk mini dresses have become a popular "mommy and me" item for summer 2010.

I'm always amazed at what clients come up with as a creative bride to be from Newport Beach, CA recently ordered four of them in our new summer color, plum, as flower girl dresses for her wedding in July - can't wait to see photos!

Inspirational Woman of 2009

Melati Erhart was the very first face of DHR back in 2007 when we launched the company. Melati epitomizes the DHR woman - one who strives for balance in her life - not easy to do as we all know. At 33, she is a top model in Bali where it is not uncommon to walk into a resort and see her life size image on the wall of a boutique or peppered throughout a beautiful spa guide.

Not only is she extremely busy with her modeling career but she is also an active mother of two young daughters, an accomplished batik artist, jewelry designer and business owner of a popular jewelry shop in the heart of Seminyak; Bali’s trendy shopping mecca.

Melati was born and raised on the island of Bali, Indonesia in a large family of nine children and credits her mother as a guiding figure in her life. “My mother raised all nine of us and never seemed to let the chaos get to her. We were not well-off and sometimes she would go without eating for a day or two just to make sure there was enough for my brothers and sisters. Whenever life seems tough, I think of her and it helps to keep things in perspective.”

Melati and her Austrian husband, Georg, take advantage of all that Bali has to offer and enjoy family Sundays at Ku De Ta, an internationally renowned hot spot located on the beach in Seminyak. Their favorite restaurants include Naught Nuri’s and Ary’s Warung in Ubud, sunsets at Rock Bar, the Ayana Resort, in Nusa Dua and La Lucciola in Seminyak.

We are so inspired by Melati’s determination to balance family, career and creative passion that we have named one of our new 2010 summer dresses after her. The Melati dress epitomizes her carefree island-inspired style and will be launched this spring.

My New Uniform

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but I am LIVING in our new mini-dress!

As a dress or tunic top, they really do epitomize the DHR lifestyle; comfortable luxe.

I wish I had thought of this little dress when I was pregnant - I would have lived in them as dresses in the beginning; tops and skirts when things started to get out of control!

Last night, I wore the sage tunic over white linen pants with my silver Bernardo thong sandals…I am addicted!

Kohala Coast Wrap  Luxurious silk wraps

Diamond Head Road's mission is to bring Hawaiian design to a whole new luxury level; incorporating art forms and images that we saw in the early 1900's. Our philosophy is to provide clients with the absolute best quality on the market, yet with low maintenance care that doesn't infringe on today's super charged lifestyle.

Our pure silk charmeuse wraps epitomize this vision and continue to be the best selling component of the Diamond Head Road line. Our clients love the wraps for their versatility: Sarong? Check. Shawl? Check. Wrap skirt? Check. Blanket? Check. Comfort for teething baby? Check.

No kidding. My clients continue to educate me on the ways our wraps serve them. We recently had a wonderfully artsy gal buy five of the Torch Ginger in Papaya to use as tablecloths for an upcoming event. I'm always open to creative and unique suggestions!

My favorite aspect of our silk wraps beyond their versatility and scrumptiousness is their low maintenance. Everyone is afraid of silk due to the notion that it can't be washed. On the contrary, grade A silk is a durable natural fiber that CAN be gently washed and dried on a low to medium temp - make sure to remove the wraps promptly as the dry quickly and won't wrinkle if you remove them while still hot. The silk does lose a little bit of its lustrous shine, but I actually prefer the sand washed, vintage look that it takes on with each washing. To ensure that our wraps could handle several washings, we sew them with pure silk thread - not rayon or cotton that causes buckling when washed.

So, please enjoy and don't be afraid to get some use out of your wrap. With two young kids, it is quite common for me to throw a wet wrap into my bag after a long day at the beach; toss it in the wash with the towels, dry it and immediately put it back on as a dress or skirt for the evening.

Super Skinny Scarves Fringed silk scarves

I am in love with our new super skinny and have been wearing Pink Champagne even under the blazing Bali sun!

For the holidays, we have introduced a smaller, more delicate version of our signature Torch Ginger design in four colors: black, cocoa, navy and pink champagne. The black is unbelievably gorgeous with the silver Torch Ginger design.

The super skinnys are perfect scarves and great for getting creative as head wraps and belts.

Have fun!
